We finally started introducing “solids” to Landon, which actually are super runny purées. So far he’s had only avocado and doesn’t seem to be a huge fan of it. That said, apparently all babies push all purees out of their mouths at first. The earliest introduction of solids isn’t meant to enhance his nutrition or caloric intake; rather, it’s meant to get him used to the process and mechanics of eating off a utensil and swallowing.
Landon has always had struggles feeding — we were never able to breastfeed and bottle feeding, though still not normal, has improved greatly thanks to our wonderful occupational therapist who works with us weekly. I suspect his history of feeding challenges will also make it a little harder for Landon get used to purees. Thankfully we still have therapy and can learn techniques to help him!
Although I won’t be so ambitious as to say I’m going to make 100 percent of Landon’s baby food, I’m hoping to make the majority of it and already have avocado, yam, pea, carrot and butternut squash puree cubes in the freezer, as well as a huge amount of homemade applesauce.
Despite his confusion about what he’s supposed to with food on a spoon, he’s very interested in food. Even if he just ate and is satisfied, Landon screams every time Brian and I eat dinner so he usually ends up sitting on one of our laps where he spends the meal reaching for our plates. He very nearly snagged a piece of kale recently.
Landon also thinks he’s ready for coffee. No doubt he’s a large part of why we go through so much brew!
